{"id":1369,"date":"2021-04-08T00:12:14","date_gmt":"2021-04-07T21:12:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/quran-for-all.com\/blog\/the-fifth-pillar-of-islam-the-pilgrimage-hajj\/"},"modified":"2021-04-08T00:12:14","modified_gmt":"2021-04-07T21:12:14","slug":"the-fifth-pillar-of-islam-the-pilgrimage-hajj","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/quran-for-all.com\/blog\/the-fifth-pillar-of-islam-the-pilgrimage-hajj\/","title":{"rendered":"The Fifth Pillar of Islam: Hajj"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Hajj (Pilgrimage to Makkah) is the fifth of the fundamental Muslim practices and institutions known as the five pillars of Islam. \u00a0Pilgrimage is not undertaken in Islam to the shrines of saints, to monasteries for help from holy men, or to sights where miracles are supposed to have occurred, even though we may see many Muslims do this.<\/p>\n<p>Pilgrimage is made to the Ka`bah, found in the sacred city of Makkah in Saudi \u0650Arabia, the \u2018House of God,\u2019 whose sanctity rests in that the P<a title=\"Hajj: From Abraham to Muhammad, and In-between\" href=\"http:\/\/www.new-muslims.info\/featured\/hajj-abraham-muhammad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">rophet Abraham<\/a> (peace be upon him) built it for <a title=\"Worship in Islam: True Purpose and Motives\" href=\"http:\/\/www.new-muslims.info\/uncategorized\/worship-in-islam-true-purpose-and-motives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the worship of God<\/a>. \u00a0God rewarded him by attributing <a title=\"The Ka&#096;bah: History and Significance\" href=\"http:\/\/www.new-muslims.info\/featured\/kabah-history-significance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the House<\/a> to himself, in essence honoring it, and by making it the devotional epicenter which all Muslims face when offering the <a title=\"About Prayer: The Second Pillar of Islam\" href=\"http:\/\/www.new-muslims.info\/acts-of-worship\/prayers-salat\/about-prayer-the-second-pillar-of-islam\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">prayers (<em>salah<\/em>)<\/a>. \u00a0The<a title=\"Hajj Rites Made Easy\u2026\" href=\"http:\/\/www.new-muslims.info\/featured\/hajj-rites-made-easy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> rites of pilgrimage<\/a> are performed today exactly as did by Abraham, and after him by <a title=\"Prophet Muhammad\u2019s Farewell Pilgrimage and Sermon\" href=\"http:\/\/www.new-muslims.info\/acts-of-worship\/hajj-pilgrimage\/prophet-muhammads-farewell-pilgrimage-and-sermon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Prophet Muhammad<\/a> (peace be upon him).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.new-muslims.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/MASJID-UYI.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5734 aligncenter\" title=\"MASJID UYI\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.new-muslims.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/MASJID-UYI-300x225.jpg?resize=300%2C225\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Pilgrimage is viewed as a particularly meritorious activity. \u00a0Pilgrimage serves as a penance &#8211; the ultimate forgiveness for sins, devotion, and intense spirituality. \u00a0The pilgrimage to Mecca, the most sacred city in Islam, is required of all physically and financially able Muslims once in their life.<\/p>\n<p>The pilgrimage rite begins a few months after Ramadan, on the 8th day of the last month of the Islamic year of Dhul-Hijjah, and ends on the 13th day. \u00a0Mecca is the center towards which the Muslims converge once a year, meet and refresh in themselves the faith that all Muslims are equal and deserve the love and sympathy of others, irrespective of their race or ethnic origin. \u00a0The racial harmony fostered by Hajj is perhaps best captured by Malcolm X on his historic pilgrimage:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.new-muslims.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/The_Fifth_Pillar_of_Islam_-_The_Pilgrimage_Hajj_0011.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5735 aligncenter\" title=\"The_Fifth_Pillar_of_Islam_-_The_Pilgrimage_(Hajj)_001\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.new-muslims.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/The_Fifth_Pillar_of_Islam_-_The_Pilgrimage_Hajj_0011.jpg?resize=280%2C182\" alt=\"\" width=\"280\" height=\"182\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2018Every one of the thousands at the airport, about to leave for Jidda, was dressed this way. \u00a0You could be a king or a peasant and no one would know. \u00a0Some powerful personages, who were discreetly pointed out to me, had on the same thing I had on. \u00a0Once thus dressed, we all had begun intermittently calling out <em>\u201cLabbayka! (Allahumma) Labbayka<\/em>!\u201d (At your service, O Lord!)<\/p>\n<p>Packed in the plane were white, black, brown, red, and yellow people, blue eyes and blond hair, and my kinky red hair &#8211; all together, brothers! \u00a0All honoring the same God, all in turn giving equal honor to each other . . .<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.new-muslims.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/MASJID-ABVI.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5736 aligncenter\" title=\"MASJID ABVI\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.new-muslims.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/MASJID-ABVI-300x200.jpg?resize=300%2C200\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>That is when I first began to reappraise the \u2018white man\u2019. It was when I first began to perceive that \u2018white man\u2019, as commonly used, means complexion only secondarily; primarily it described attitudes and actions. \u00a0In America, \u2018white man\u2019 meant specific attitudes and actions toward the black man, and toward all other non-white men. \u00a0But in the Muslim world, I had seen that men with white complexions were more genuinely brotherly than anyone else had ever been. \u00a0That morning was the start of a radical alteration in my whole outlook about \u2018white\u2019 men.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.new-muslims.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/OLD-HAJJ-DUA.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-5737 aligncenter\" title=\"OLD HAJJ DUA\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.new-muslims.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/OLD-HAJJ-DUA-199x300.jpg?resize=201%2C306\" alt=\"\" width=\"201\" height=\"306\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There were tens of thousands of pilgrims, from all over the world. \u00a0They were of all colors, from blue-eyed blonds to black-skinned Africans. But we were all participating in the same ritual displaying a spirit of unity and brotherhood that my experiences in America had led me to believe never could exist between the white and the non-white. \u00a0America needs to understand Islam, because this is the one religion that erases from its society the race problem.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout my travels in the Muslim world, I have met, talked to, and even eaten with people who in America would have been considered white &#8211; but the \u2018white\u2019 attitude was removed from their minds by the religion of Islam. \u00a0I have never before seen <a title=\"Hajj: A Universal Message of Unity\" href=\"http:\/\/www.new-muslims.info\/acts-of-worship\/hajj-pilgrimage\/hajj-a-universal-message-of-unity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sincere and true brotherhood practiced by all colors together<\/a>, irrespective of their color.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.new-muslims.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/MECCA-KABBA.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5738 aligncenter\" title=\"MECCA KABBA\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.new-muslims.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/MECCA-KABBA-300x225.jpg?resize=300%2C225\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Thus the pilgrimage unites the Muslims of the world into one international fraternity. \u00a0More than two million persons perform the Hajj each year, and the rite serves as a unifying force in Islam by bringing followers of diverse backgrounds together in worship. \u00a0In some Muslim societies, once a believer has made the pilgrimage, he is often labeled with the title <em>\u2018hajji\u2019<\/em> ; this, however, is a cultural, rather than religious custom.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, the <a title=\"Hajj: It Is All About God\u2019s Oneness\" href=\"http:\/\/www.new-muslims.info\/featured\/hajj-it-is-all-about-gods-oneness\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hajj is a manifestation of the belief in the unity of God <\/a>&#8211; all the pilgrims <a title=\"Hajj: It Is All About God\u2019s Oneness\" href=\"http:\/\/www.new-muslims.info\/featured\/hajj-it-is-all-about-gods-oneness\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">worship and obey the commands of the One God<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.new-muslims.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/MANARAT.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5739 size-medium\" title=\"MANARAT\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.new-muslims.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/MANARAT-225x300.jpg?resize=225%2C300\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>At certain stations on the caravan routes to Makkah, or when the pilgrim passes the point nearest to those stations, the pilgrim enters the state of purity known as <em>ihram<\/em>. In this state, the certain \u2018normal\u2019 actions of the day and night become impermissible for the pilgrims, such as covering the head, clipping the fingernails, and wearing normal clothing in regards to men. Males remove their clothing and don the garments specific to this <a title=\"Hajj Rites Made Easy\u2026\" href=\"http:\/\/www.new-muslims.info\/featured\/hajj-rites-made-easy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">state of <em>ihram<\/em><\/a>, \u00a0two white seamless sheets that are wrapped around the body.<\/p>\n<p>All this increases the reverence and sanctity of the pilgrimage, the city of Makkah, and<a title=\"Ten Blessed Days: Don\u2019t Miss\" href=\"http:\/\/www.new-muslims.info\/acts-of-worship\/hajj-pilgrimage\/ten-blessed-days-dont-miss\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> month of Dhul-Hijjah<\/a>. There are 5 stations, one on the coastal plains northwest of Mecca towards Egypt and one south towards Yemen, while three lie north or eastwards towards Medina, Iraq and al-Najd. \u00a0The simple garb signifies the equality of all humanity in God\u2019s sight, and the removal of all worldly affections.<\/p>\n<p>After<a title=\"Hajj: Why and How?\" href=\"http:\/\/www.new-muslims.info\/acts-of-worship\/hajj-pilgrimage\/hajj\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> entering the state of<em> ihram<\/em><\/a>, the pilgrim proceeds to Makkah and awaits <a title=\"Hajj: Why and How?\" href=\"http:\/\/www.new-muslims.info\/acts-of-worship\/hajj-pilgrimage\/hajj\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the start of the Hajj<\/a>. \u00a0On <a title=\"First Ten Days of Dhul-Hijjah: Special Season of Worship\" href=\"http:\/\/www.new-muslims.info\/featured\/first-ten-days-dhul-hijjah-special-season-worship\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the 7th\u00a0of Dhu al-Hijjah <\/a>the pilgrim is reminded of his duties, and at the commence of the ritual, which takes place between the 8th and the 12th days of the month, t<a title=\"Sunnah Acts in Hajj\" href=\"http:\/\/www.new-muslims.info\/featured\/sunnah-acts-hajj\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">he pilgrim visits the holy places outside Makkah<\/a> &#8211; `Arafah, Muzdalifah, and Mina &#8211; and sacrifices an animal in commemoration of Abraham\u2019s sacrifice.<\/p>\n<p>The pilgrim then shortens or shaves their head, and, after throwing seven stones at specific pillars at Mina\u00a0on three or four successive days, and heads for the central mosque where he walks seven times around the sacred sanctuary, or <a title=\"The Ka&#096;bah: History and Significance\" href=\"http:\/\/www.new-muslims.info\/featured\/kabah-history-significance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Ka`bah<\/em><\/a>, in the Great Mosque, and ambulates, <a title=\"How to Make Hajj (3\/3)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.new-muslims.info\/acts-of-worship\/hajj-pilgrimage\/how-to-make-hajj-33\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">walking and running, seven times between the two small hills of Mt. Safaa and Mt. Marwah<\/a>. \u00a0Discussing the historical or spiritual significance of each rite is beyond the scope of this introductory article.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.new-muslims.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/MASJID-NABUI.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5740 aligncenter\" title=\"MASJID NABUI\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.new-muslims.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/MASJID-NABUI-300x225.jpg?resize=300%2C225\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Apart from Hajj, the <a title=\"How to Make &#096;Umrah\" href=\"http:\/\/www.new-muslims.info\/acts-of-worship\/hajj-pilgrimage\/how-to-make-umrah\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201cminor pilgrimage\u201d or <em>`Umrah<\/em><\/a> is undertaken by Muslims during the rest of the year. \u00a0Performing the <em>`Umrah<\/em> does not fulfill the obligation of Hajj. \u00a0It is similar to the major and obligatory <a title=\"All About Hajj\" href=\"http:\/\/www.new-muslims.info\/acts-of-worship\/hajj-pilgrimage\/all-about-hajj-2013\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Islamic Pilgrimage (Hajj)<\/a>, and pilgrims have the choice of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.muslim-library.com\/dl\/books\/English_Brief_Guide_to_Hajj.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">performing the <em>`Umrah<\/em> separately or in combination with the Hajj<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As in the Hajj, the pilgrim begins the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.new-muslims.info\/acts-of-worship\/hajj-pilgrimage\/how-to-make-umrah-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">`Umrah<\/a><\/em> by assuming the state of <em>ihram<\/em>. \u00a0They enter Mecca and circle the sacred shrine of the Kaaba seven times. \u00a0He may then touch the Black Stone, if he can, pray behind the <em>Maqam <a title=\"Hajj: From Abraham to Muhammad, and In-between\" href=\"http:\/\/www.new-muslims.info\/featured\/hajj-abraham-muhammad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ibrahim<\/a><\/em>, drink the holy water of the Zamzam spring. \u00a0The ambulation between the hills of Safa and Marwah seven times and the shortening or shaving of the head complete the <em>`Umrah<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>[ica_orginalurl]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If not a visit to the shrines of saints, to monasteries for help from holy men, or to sights where miracles are supposed to have occurred, what Hajj is all about?
