{"id":733,"date":"2018-07-03T05:14:24","date_gmt":"2018-07-03T02:14:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/quran-for-all.com\/blog\/2018\/07\/03\/shirk-its-meaning-and-punishment-in-islam\/"},"modified":"2018-07-03T05:14:24","modified_gmt":"2018-07-03T02:14:24","slug":"shirk-its-meaning-and-punishment-in-islam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/quran-for-all.com\/blog\/shirk-its-meaning-and-punishment-in-islam\/","title":{"rendered":"Shirk: Its Meaning and Punishment in Islam?"},"content":{"rendered":"<pre><strong>By: <\/strong><strong>Muhammad Bin Ibrahim Bin `Abdullah Al-Tuwayjiri<\/strong><\/pre>\n<p>Shirk is to set up a partner with Allah (Exalted be He) in His <em>rububiyyah<\/em> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newmuslim.net\/abcs-of-islam\/divine-unity\/allah-is-one-why-do-we-believe-in-that\/\">Oneness of Allah&#8217;s Lordship<\/a>), or His <em>uluhiyyah<\/em> (Oneness of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newmuslim.net\/abcs-of-islam\/divine-unity\/why-do-we-worship-and-obey-god\/\">worship<\/a>) or His attributes.<\/p>\n<p>So if a person believes that there is a creator or helper with Allah then he is a <em>mushrik<\/em>; whoever believes that someone besides Allah is worthy of worship then he is a <em>mushrik<\/em>; and whoever believes that Allah has an equal in His names and attributes then he is a <em>mushrik<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Danger of Shirk<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>1-<\/strong> Committing shirk is great injustice because it is a violation of the exclusive right of Allah, which is<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newmuslim.net\/abcs-of-islam\/divine-unity\/oneness-god-mans-recognition\/\"><em> tawheed<\/em> <\/a>(Oneness of Allah). Hence, <em>tawheed<\/em> is the most fair of justices, and shirk is the most unfair of injustices and the most abominable of offences; because it is defaming the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newmuslim.net\/abcs-of-islam\/pillars-of-islam\/what-does-it-mean-to-believe-in-allah-part-1\/\">Lord of the worlds<\/a>, directing what is exclusively His right to other than Him and equating Him with others.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, due to the great danger of shirk whoever meets Allah as a <em>mushrik <\/em>Allah will not forgive him, as Allah says:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;padding-right: 30px\"><strong>Indeed, Allah does not forgive setting up partners with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills. And whoever sets up partners with Allah has certainly fabricated a tremendous sin.<\/strong> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.learning-quran.com\/quran-translations\/en-translation\/recitation-of-surat-an-nisaa-3\/\">An-Nisaa\u2019<\/a> 4:48)<\/p>\n<p><strong>2-<\/strong> Committing shirk is the greatest of sins, for whoever worships other than Allah has placed worship in other than its rightful place and directed it to other than who is worthy of it; and that is great injustice and a heinous offence, as Allah says:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;padding-right: 30px\"><strong>Indeed, shirk is great injustice.<\/strong> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.learning-quran.com\/quran-translations\/spanish-translation\/recitation-of-surat-luqman\/\">Luqman<\/a> 31:13)<\/p>\n<p><strong>3-<\/strong> Major shirk renders all deeds worthless, necessitates destruction and loss, and is the greatest of major sins:<\/p>\n<p>1\u2013 Allah says:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;padding-right: 30px\"><strong>And it was already revealed to you and to those before you: \u2018If you set up partners with Allah, your deeds would surely become worthless, and you would surely be among the losers.\u2019 Rather, worship Allah alone and be among the grateful.<\/strong> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.learning-quran.com\/quran-translations\/spanish-translation\/recitation-of-surat-az-zumar\/\">Az-Zumar<\/a> 39:65-66)<\/p>\n<p>2\u2013 And Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated:<\/p>\n<p>The Prophet (peace be upon him) said thrice, \u201cShall I not inform you of the greatest of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newmuslim.net\/acts-of-worship\/alkabair\/major-sins-in-islam\/\">major sins<\/a>?\u201d They said, \u201cYes, O Messenger of Allah!\u201d He said, \u201cCommitting shirk and disobedience to parents.\u201d He sat up after he had been reclining and added, \u201cAnd giving false witness.\u201d He continued to repeat it until we said, \u201cWe wish he would be quiet.\u201d (AL-Bukhari and Muslim)<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Abominable Characteristics of Shirk<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Allah has mentioned four abominable characteristics of shirk in four verses. They are:<\/p>\n<p>1 \u2013Allah says:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;padding-right: 30px\"><strong>Indeed, Allah does not forgive setting up partners with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills. And whoever sets up partners with Allah has certainly fabricated a tremendous sin.<\/strong> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.learning-quran.com\/quran-translations\/en-translation\/recitation-of-surat-an-nisaa-3\/\">An-Nisaa\u2019<\/a> 4:48)<\/p>\n<p>2\u2013 Allah says:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;padding-right: 30px\"><strong>And whoever sets up partners with Allah has certainly gone far astray.<\/strong> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.learning-quran.com\/quran-translations\/en-translation\/recitation-of-surat-an-nisaa-3\/\">An-Nisaa\u2019<\/a> 4:116)<\/p>\n<p>3\u2013 Allah says:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;padding-right: 30px\"><strong>Indeed, whoever sets up partners with Allah &#8211; Allah has forbidden him Paradise, and his abode is the Fire. And there are no helpers for the wrongdoers.<\/strong> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.learning-quran.com\/quran-translations\/en-translation\/recitation-of-surat-al-maidah-3\/\">Al-Ma\u2019idah<\/a> 5:72)<\/p>\n<p>4\u2013 Allah says:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;padding-right: 30px\"><strong>And whoever sets up partners with Allah &#8211; it is as though he had fallen from the sky and was snatched by the birds, or the wind had thrown him to a far off place.<\/strong> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.learning-quran.com\/quran-translations\/en-translation\/recitation-surat-al-hajj\/\">Al-Hajj<\/a> 22:31)<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Punishment for Those Who Commit Shirk<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>1\u2013 Allah says:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;padding-right: 30px\"><strong>Indeed, those who disbelieve among the People of the Scripture and the polytheists will be in the Fire of Hell, abiding eternally therein.
