Former member of Geert Wilders’ far-right party converts\u00a0while writing anti-Islam book<\/h3>\n
A Dutch MP who was formerly a member of anti-Islam politician Geert Wilders\u2018\u00a0far-right party has announced he has converted to Islam.<\/p>\n
Joram van Klaveren had denounced Islam as \u201ca lie\u201d and said \u201cthe Quran is poison\u201d during his time as a politician for the Freedom Party (PVV).<\/p>\n
However, the 40-year-old has now said he had become a Muslim\u00a0while writing what was intended to be an anti-Islam book.<\/p>\n
\u201cDuring that writing I came across more and more things that made my view on Islam falter,\u201d he told Dutch TV show NieuwLicht.<\/p>\n
Mr Wilders compared his former right-hand man\u2019s conversion to \u201ca vegetarian going to work in a slaughterhouse\u201d, RTL TV reported.<\/p>\n
Mr Van Klaveren was an MP for the PVV between 2010 and 2014, but left after Mr Wilders asked supporters if they wanted fewer Moroccans in the Netherlands during a rally in 2014.<\/p>\n
When the crowd shouted back \u201cfewer\u201d, Mr Wilders smiled and answered: \u201cThen we\u2019ll fix it.\u201d He has since been convicted of inciting hatred and discrimination”.<\/p>\n
In an interview with\u00a0Dutch newspaper NRC<\/em>, Mr Van Klaveren said his comments about Islam were \u201csimply incorrect\u201d.<\/p>\n
He added: \u201cBut that was PVV policy: everything that did not work had to be linked to Islam in one way or another.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mr Van Klaveren\u2019s book, which he\u00a0initially intended to be anti-Islam, will now be called\u00a0Apostate: From Christianity to Islam in the Time of Secular Terror<\/em>.<\/p>\n
